Overview
This section emphasizes the importance of two fundamental technical principles of Aikido practice: (1) Core Basics and (2) Movement Awareness. These principles will serve to combine all parts of your body in proper structure for holistic movements to enable you technically accomplish Aikido goals of conflict neutralization.
Unit 1. Kamae | Standing Position
With this lesson you will learn the fundamental technical concept of Aikido practice - the “Stance Structure”. The lesson provides video instructions with detailed technical guidelines and exercises aimed to develop the formation of the physical body instrumental for the Aikido practice. The lesson also includes certain mindset concepts that will help you expand your knowledge about Aikido and organize your practice accordingly.
Unit 2. Seiza | Sitting Position
With this lesson you will increase your understanding of sitting position in Aikido. Seiza is not only a way to develop your lower body muscles,
but also a position of awareness and focus, which expresses your attitude to the place of the way. In this lesson you will also learn the transitional
movements from seiza to kamae, which are efficient and injury aware. The lesson provides video instructions with detailed technical guidelines
and exercises aimed to develop your skills for intelligent and enjoyable Aikido practice. This lesson also includes certain mindset concepts that
will help you expand your knowledge about Aikido and organize your practice accordingly.
Unit 3. Shikko | Knee Walk
With this lesson you will be able to develop your mobility skills in the sitting position. Basically, this lesson is about how to make your seiza mobile. Shikko or knee walk is a valuable tool to develop you Gedan (the lower part of the body), center and balance. Shikko is a fulfillment of the idea that you have to be ever ready and always find comfort in the moment, even if you are in a sitting position.
Unit 4. Aikiken | Sword of Aikido
With this lesson you will be able to build the core basics which include the development of (1) the stance structure and (2) the arms form. The skill to use the structure of the body is fundamental for the Aikido practice. You will discover how the bokken is transformed into the Aikiken and serves the purpose of unification, not separation. The practice with the Aikiken is aimed to unite all the parts of your body together in the holistic movements of Aikido. You will be able to learn how to approach the bokken to prepare your body for the Aikido practice.
Unit 5. Aikijo | Staff of Aikido
With this lesson you will be able to build the core basics with the Aikijo which include the development of (1) the stance structure and (2) the arms form. The skill to use the structure of the body is fundamental for the Aikido practice. You will discover how the jo is transformed into the Aikijo and serves the purpose of unification, not destructive goals. The practice with the Aikijo is aimed to unite all the parts of your body together in the holistic movements of Aikido. You will be able to learn how to approach the jo to prepare your body for the Aikido practice.
Unit 6. Tegatana | Arms Form
With this lesson you will be able to consider and structure your arm formations to merge and lead Uke in Aikido techniques. You will understand the connection between the arms form principle of Aikido and the Aikido weapons. You will learn how to acquire the striking skills sufficient for Aikido practice. You will be able to examine the qualities of the arm formation serving the goals of Aikido (merging and leading) at the certain phases of Aikido technique performance. You will also be able to understand the proper positioning of the arm forms in Aikido.
Unit 7. Mae Ukemi | Forward Roll
With this lesson you will be able to consider positioning and structuring your body for the forward roll of Aikido. You will be provided with the body structuring details and the instructions how to approach Mae Ukemi in the right sequence of the setting-up movements to provide safety and success of the movement execution. You will also learn how to develop your Tobi Ukemi skills, the safety fall dawn with the bouncing action, applicable when Mae Ukemi is not possible.
Unit 8. Ushiro Ukemi | Backward Roll
With this lesson you will be able to consider positioning and structuring of your body for the backward roll of Aikido. You will be provided with the body structuring details and the instructions how to approach Ushiro Ukemi in the right sequence of the setting-up movements to provide safety and success of the movement execution. You will also learn how to develop your Tobi Ukemi skills, the safety fall down with the bouncing action, applicable when rolling is not possible.
Unit 9. Tenkan | The Body Turn
With this lesson you will be able to learn and examine the Tenkan movement, which stands as the core for virtually half of Aikido techniques. You will get acquainted with the Tenkai, which is the first stage of the Tenkan Full Spin and serves the functions of merging and obtaining the strategic position regarding Uke. You will also be able to examine the essential elements of the Tenkan rotation performance aimed to manage control and leadership in Aikido techniques.
Unit 10. Irimi | The Entrance
With this lesson you will be able to learn and examine the Entrance approach, which stands as the core for virtually half of Aikido techniques. You will get acquainted with the conditioning movement of Irimi which constitutes the basis for the Entrance performance. You will be able to examine this essential element which is aimed to help you escape the attack and obtain the strategic position for the Entrance. You will also learn how to perform the Entrance correctly by receiving the complete set of reference points to tune your Irimi performance.
